Early life

Born on the first day of 1989 in Newcastle, Joey’s upbringing was conducive to his eventual success in the performing arts, thanks to a supportive family environment. His mother, a producer in the British TV industry, nurtured his musical talents and encouraged an appreciation for the creative arts from a young age. Joey grew up alongside two sisters, Laura and Suzie, in a household that valued artistic expression.

After completing his education at St. Cuthbert’s High School, Joey pursued higher learning at Cambridge, where he delved into linguistics as well as medieval and modern languages. University life also saw him venture into scriptwriting, contributing to a sketch show that featured performances by his gifted peers, Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen.

Joey’s academic pursuits polished his proficiency in English and enabled him to become fluent in French and Spanish. Armed with his degree, he set off for Paris to attend the prestigious Jacques Lecoq School of Acting. This combination of natural talent and cultivated skill made him a compelling choice for casting directors, leading to an early opportunity to participate in a notable project shortly after graduation.

Actor Joey Batey

Joey Batey embarked on his acting career with a strong theatrical background, having taken the stage for the first time in 2008. His experience spans both Broadway and West End productions, featuring notable performances in classics like “Macbeth,” “Romeo and Juliet,” as well as contemporary pieces such as “The Alchemist.”

His foray into television began in 2013 with a role in the Geoffrey Sax-directed thriller “Murder on the Home Front.” Batey then portrayed the offspring of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou in “The White Queen,” adapted from Philippa Gregory’s novels. His subsequent appearances included roles in “Whitechapel” alongside Rupert Penry-Jones, “Mount Pleasant,” and “Strike,” to name a few, culminating in a significant part in “Knightfall” as Pierre in 2017.

However, it was his role in “The Witcher,” derived from Andrzej Sapkowski’s literary series, that catapulted Batey to stardom. As Jaskier, the endearing bard and steadfast companion to the protagonist, he captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, particularly with a musical performance that became an instant internet sensation. The song’s success was a testament to the composing talents of Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, the musical minds behind the show.

The search for the perfect Jaskier was extensive, with the casting directors setting high standards to find a fit. Batey’s aptitude for the role became clear when his lute performance solidified his place in the series. Although initially set to continue in 2020, the shoot was postponed due to the pandemic. In its second installment, Batey worked alongside notable actors such as Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, Eamon Farren, and Lars Mikkelsen, further establishing his prominence within the series.
