Andre Braugher

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 1, 1962, Andre Keith Braugher was the youngest member of a family with humble origins. His mother, Sally, served in the postal sector, while his father, Floyd, operated heavy machinery. Raised in the Austin district, he attended St. Ignatius College Prep, excelling in his studies. This academic prowess led to a scholarship at Stanford University’s theater department. In pursuit of enhancing his acting skills, he later enrolled at the esteemed Juilliard School in 1984.

Braugher’s initial foray into the world of film was through the 1989 movie “Glory,” portraying the character of Corporal Thomas Searles. He further expanded his acting portfolio that year with a role in the “Kojak” TV series, portraying Detective Winston Blake. His career took a significant leap in 1993 with a role in “Striking Distance,” alongside Bruce Willis.

During the period from 1993 to 1998, Braugher’s role as Detective Frank Pembleton in “Homicide: Life on the Street” garnered critical acclaim, earning him a Satellite Award nomination and an Emmy in 1998.

After leaving “Homicide,” Braugher continued to explore diverse acting opportunities. He revisited his role from “Homicide” in a 2000 film and made a guest appearance on “Law & Order.” He also demonstrated his stage prowess at Delacorte Theater in Central Park, New York, earning the Obie Award for his performance in “Henry V.”

In “Gideon’s Crossing,” Braugher’s portrayal of Dr. Ben Gideon resonated with the audience, leading to Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He later guest-starred in “The Practice,” reprising his role.

From 2002 to 2004, Braugher was part of the main cast in “Hack” and later portrayed Matt Burke in “Salem’s Lot.” His role in the 2006 miniseries “Thief” as Nick Atwater earned him another Emmy award. Braugher also impressed in the 2007 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Mist,” and in 2008, he starred in “Men of a Certain Age,” securing two Primetime Emmy nominations.

Braugher’s multifaceted talent was vividly apparent in his portrayal of the insightful psychiatrist Dr. Darryl Nolan on “House M.D.,” a role that showcased his ability to delve deep into complex characters. Additionally, his voice lent an authoritative and captivating tone as the narrator for the coverage of the Olympic Games on NBC.

His artistic range further extended to the Broadway scene in 2011, where he delivered a powerful performance in “The Whipping Man.” Around the same time, he lent his voice to the formidable villain Darkseid in the animated film “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse,” demonstrating his adaptability across various forms of entertainment.

In “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” Braugher took on the role of Bayard Ellis, an astute lawyer, imbuing the character with depth and gravitas. His performance as Captain Marcus Chaplin in “Last Resort” further affirmed his status as a versatile actor. Additionally, Braugher ventured into the realm of animation with his role as Governor Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkowitz in the popular series “BoJack Horseman,” adding another dimension to his extensive repertoire. In “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” Braugher’s role as Captain Raymond Holt has been critically acclaimed, leading to multiple Emmy and Satellite Award nominations.

Braugher married actress Ami Brabson after meeting on “Homicide: Life on the Street.” The couple, who wed in 1991, have three children: John Wesley, Michael, and Isaiah. Residing in New York, the couple is active in various social causes and charity initiatives.

Braugher’s latest appearances include a role in the 2022 drama “She Said,” produced by Brad Pitt. He is currently involved in the filming of “The Residence” and narrates the documentary series “American Experience.” As a member of the “Classical Theatre of Harlem,” he continues to contribute significantly to the arts.
