Seamus Dever

Born on July 27, 1976, in Flint, Michigan, Seamus Patrick Dever was raised in an academic family. His father, a teacher of literature and drama, and his mother, a history educator, nurtured his early interest in the arts. The family relocated to Bullhead City, Arizona, when Seamus was six. He attended Mohave High School, where he was deeply involved in extracurricular activities, including serving on the student council.

After high school, Dever pursued an education in radio journalism at Northern Arizona University. It was here that his passion for acting truly ignited. He actively participated in university theater productions, which led him to reassess his career path. Eager to delve deeper into acting, he successfully applied to both Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre School.

Seamus Dever first graced television screens in 1999 with a role in “Pensacola: Wings of Gold,” followed by a series of minor parts in various TV shows. In 2001, he earned a significant role in the thriller “Outside the Law,” and the next year, he featured in the romantic drama “Monkey Love,” starring Jeremy Renner. The ensuing years saw him appear in popular series like “Without a Trace,” “Cold Case,” “Charmed,” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” In 2005, Dever joined the cast of the thriller “Hollywoodland,” a story about the murder of a Hollywood icon, which garnered acclaim at the Venice Film Festival. The film starred notable actors like Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck, Bob Hoskins, and Phillip MacKenzie.

2008 marked a new chapter for Dever with a recurring role as Dr. Ian Devlin in “General Hospital,” one of television’s longest-running soap operas. His character featured in 45 episodes. Concurrently, he portrayed Dr. Chris Ferlinghetti in the drama series “Army Wives” and appeared in the daytime show “Good Day L.A.”

Dever’s breakthrough came with the role of Detective Kevin Ryan in “Castle” from 2009 to 2016. He brought to life a charismatic detective, formerly an undercover agent, as part of Beckett’s (Stana Katic) and Esposito’s (Jon Huertas) team. This role garnered him widespread recognition and propelled the series to great success over its eight seasons.

While starring in “Castle,” Dever continued to expand his acting repertoire. He guest-starred in series such as “Dark Blue,” “Titans,” and “The Rookie.” In 2020, he portrayed Russian Captain Alexei Goncharov in “NCIS: Los Angeles.” His most recent notable role was in 2022’s “Invitation to a Murder,” a detective thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s finest work.

Dever’s personal life is equally fulfilling. He has been married to actress Juliana Dever since 2006. The couple, who met while studying at the Moscow Art Theatre, share both a professional and personal bond, with Juliana appearing in “Castle” as his character’s wife. They advocate vegetarianism and actively support the “Best Friends Animal Society.” Dever enjoys basketball, cycling, and boxing as hobbies.

Today, Seamus Dever continues to make his mark in the television industry. He remains engaged in his craft, seeking out new and challenging roles. Recently, he has made guest appearances in series like “Kung Fu” and “NCIS: Hawai’i” and has been involved in the adventurous series “True Lies.”
